Which Reminds Me

The relation between us and the Harvey Reeves Calkins family is very distant, truth be told. We are all descended from Stephen Calkins of Connecticut (1706-1781), a great-grandson of Hugh Calkins (1603-1690), who came to America from Wales in 1640.  So up to the American Revolution we can mostly agree that we are all descendants of Hugh Calkins, who came over from England in maybe 1640. So there is 100 years or so of colonialism in our common history.

After Stephen, that is where our paths start to diverge. Harvey and Helen are descended from Stephen's fourth son, Justus Calkins (1741-1820), who was born in Sharon, CT, and died in New York.

We, in contrast, are descended from Stephen's second son Joseph (1737-1806), who was born in CT, Hebron actually, but died in Vermont, in a town called Tinmouth. Well, I did have braces as a child so that name seems to fit us better than you.

So after that our paths diverge greatly and there is nothing else that needs to be said about that. There are many Calkins in this country thanks to the migrations of Hugh and family so it is not particularly surprising to see our paths criss-crossing from time to time throughout the centuries, untold eons of time for eternity. I don't see why that has to do with anything.

Maybe someday we could all get together at one of those reunions organized by the Family Calkins Association, if only we could all get along without playing silly mousetrap games.
