Which Reminds Me
Yes, it was rather insulting to be myself an honors English student in high school, and being placed for Spanish class with a pack of dummies. In Spanish class everything has to be done in groups, which is a miserable situation where I am usually grouped with a pack of dummies who just sit there chatting about personal things and nothing ever gets done and no tasks get assigned. Or else they all just sit there blankly waiting for this stupid white girl to fall on her face, as if I am going to open my mouth prematurely and make a huge mess of everything. One does get the idea that they do not want us white people gaining access to the national literary secrets. Yes, without a deeper understanding of the local history it is very hard for a white person to make much sense out of 100 years of solitude, a ridiculously exaggerated tale of a mostly nonsensical and weird nature. Perhaps we could just leave this book on a shelf and let an army of ants carry it away, oh but that can only happen in South America, not really here. We could also go to the library and copy something out of a book, but that wouldn't have much originality and the teacher would not approve. So there was some confusion about these literary books and how they should be approached.
